Questioning the Qur’an, and More Questions

  • Much of Ideas Inspired by the Qur’an revolves around a number of vital questions, such as ‘How do I know that God exists?’ ‘If God is good, then why does evil exist?’ ‘Why should I believe in anything?’ ‘How is God compatible with free will?’ ‘Doesn’t science disprove religion?’ and ‘What is reality?’ My book is tasked with mining the Qur’an for answers to these and similar valid doubts.
  • Such questions are the basic building blocks of a strong and active faith; they should never be swept aside. There are many other questions specific to the Qur’an and Islam that I chose not to address in Ideas Inspired by the Qur’an — controversial topics such as women, war, slavery, banking, and political participation. I plan to deal with those and other thorny issues over the course of crafting these pages.
  • But if you are pitching hardball questions to God and bunting softballs to yourself, then you are not a sincere questioner nor a patient, honest reader of the Qur’an. AL-LAH makes it clear in Q21:23He is not queried over what He does, but they are questioned. In other words, the attitude you display in questioning GOD is ontological; it reveals who you think you are, and determines who He is to you.
